Carter - Editor, OK MUFONews 쿝emember the boy who cried wolf? He was the little shepherd 쿫oy who kept telling the townspeople that a wolf was nabbing 쿴is sheep from the meadow, when in reality there was no wolf 쿪t all. Finally when a real wolf did start to get at his 쿯lock, the people didn't believe him. 쿟his is a problem that faces everyone at someone or 쿪nother, especially Ufologists, researchers and interested 쿾arties in the UFO phenomenon. Because we don't have a real 쿹ive space ship or little green man caught in a net 퀂omewhere much of what is related in journals and 쿻ewsletters or from word of mouth is mainly speculation. We 쿺ust rely on the word of the person telling the story to 퀃ell the truth, make a decision about their believability 쿪nd credibility as a witness, and if he has a good 퀁eputation and we are not going to make the effort to 쿾ersonally check out the facts, take his story at face value 퀅ntil we can prove otherwise. Alas sometimes a story that 쿲ets circulated has not been as well checked out for 쿪uthenticity as it should. 쿞uch is the case with the cover story of the November issue 쿽f OK MUFONews. In that article taken directly from the 쿖eelyNet BBS and entitled "Something Is Coming Our Way" John 쿑ord of the Long Island UFO Network related a story that he 퀂aid was substantiated by several sources of good 쿬redibility. The story was of an object in the vicinity of 쿕upiter that was heading toward Earth. 쿌ccording to John, the object had been detected by the 쿲overnment and was being kept secret. Allegedly it had made 퀂everal course corrections along the way indicating that it 쿺ight be intelligently controlled. 쿘r. Ford did say in the article however, that, "As yet no 쿮vidence exists to support it...". 쿓e also says, "In UFOlogy, you hear a lot of strange 퀂tories. Some you have to take at face value, while others 쿪re too far fetched to believe even in this strange study of 퀅nusual objects and humanoid beings. Some stories you mark 쿽ff as holding merit, but lack supporting evidence to 쿫olster their credibility until a later date when something 쿺ight surface which could prove their validity. This is such 쿪 story". 쿌fter the issue was published, we received several calls 쿯rom people who were very interested in the article and 퀇anted to know where they could obtain more information. It 퀃hen occurred to me that I couldn't tell them. I completely 쿪nd utterly had nowhere to tell them to go to verify the 퀂tory. I hadn't checked it out. 쿚ne reader called Linda Howe, who Mr. Ford said had related 퀃he story to him, to confirm the story and she told him that 퀂he was not very happy about the way she was represented in 퀃he article. She said that the story had been going around 쿯or a long time but she did not know whether it was true or 쿻ot. 쿔 then tried to call Mr. Ford in Long Island but could not 쿲et his number. Another reader also tried but found him 퀅nreachable. 쿌s a better measure, I tried to download a file I found on 쿛aranet about the Long Island UFO Network. Unfortunately I 퀇as not able to get the file to download. Thwarted again to 쿯ind the source and confirm the article's authenticity. 쿞o until the story can be confirmed, please take it as an 쿢NCONFIRMED piece of information. It may turn out to be a 쿯light of fancy. At this time, Mr. Ford has not been 쿬ontacted or had a chance to respond. If we can do so, he 퀇ill be invited to send his sources of information so we can 쿬lear this matter up once and for all. We want to give every 쿽pportunity to clarify the story. 쿔n any case, please accept my deepest apologies for not 쿯ollowing up and confirming the story BEFORE it was put in 쿾rint for your consideration. Rest assured that we at 쿚klahoma MUFON have never, nor will we ever purposely 쿾ublish information that we know to be false. That would 쿽nly serve to trash our credibility and to thwart all of our 쿪ttempts to get at the truth behind the UFO mystery. And 쿪fter all isn't the discovery of the truth the whole point 쿽f spending hours and money out of our own pockets to search 쿯or an answer to a question that burns bright in all of our 쿺inds? Deliberately misleading the public would be like 퀂tealing our own sheep and crying "Wolf!" When the real 퀃ruth does finally come out, no one will believe us. 쿌t this point, make no prejudgments about Mr. Ford since he 쿴as not been contacted to check out his sources. Also, this 쿶n no way reflects on the Long Island UFO Network. We do 쿴owever appreciate the intelligence of our readership in not 쿫lindly accepting everything they see in print without 퀂ubstantial proof. Kudos to you! =END= 읕컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴컴켸 --- FMail 0.94 * Origin: * On Topic? What's that? <-> FidoNet UFO Moderator * (1:123/26.1)
