From: James Randi --- Wizard To: broadcast-randi-hotline@ssr.com Subject: DUST-BITING, QUADRO STYLE Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 00:43:47 -0500 As some of you may know, on Friday morning, January 19, the FBI Economic Crimes unit closed in on the Quadro Corporation in Harleyville, South Carolina. They seized their merchandise and records, and arrested the officers of the corporation. They were charged with fraud and wire fraud. I returned home to find 189 messages on my e-mail, and a massive number of faxes. Many communications were from those who had endorsed the Quadro device and to whom I'd sent letters. Most denied their endorsements. On Saturday, the FBI sent out a bulletin to their branches. In part, it read: "A device marketed to law enforcement agencies nationwide, the Quadro Tracker...is a fraud. All agencies should immediately cease using the device if used as a basis for probable cause." That last eight words interest me. The major fear, it seems, is that a bust made using the Quadro could be nullified because this is not a properly-approved means of investigation, and not a basis for an arrest. I'll go further: the thing doesn't work AT ALL. You'll be amused to know the post-script that Wade Quattlebaum, the arrogant president of the Quadro Corporation, added to his last letter to me: "We may be calling upon your magical powers to get us out of prison if the Tracker does not work as advertised." Well, Mr. Quattlebaum, I'm not presently available for that sort of work. I'm sure, using the Tracker, you'll be able to find a way out, all by yourselves. (Don't forget: the faithful will be tuned in to PBS on Tuesday night to watch a re-run of "Secrets of the Psychics." And the February issue of Scientific American magazine has my essay, "Miracles, Italian Style.)
