The Venerable Sayadaw is a highly respected elder of the Theravada Buddhist monastic order and a renowned meditation master in the Mahasi Sayadaw tradition. Sayadaw teaches from his own profound meditative experience gained over six decades of monastic training and a detailed study of Buddhist scriptures. He has traveled and taught extensively, and has helped in the development of new meditation centers around the world. His book, //In This Very Life: The Liberation Teachings of the Buddha//, is an inspiring and practical guide to meditation and the teachings of the Buddha. He is presently abbot of Panditarama Monastery in Rangoon, Burma. The Practice ~~~~~~~~~~~~ //Satipatthana vipassana//, also known as insight meditation, has its origin in the teachings of the Buddha. The foundation of this practice is right moral conduct. The meditative practice itself is the constant, close observation and precise mental noting of the moment-to-moment mind/body experience. Careful adherence to this practice, together with moral integrity, enables the practitioner to gain an understanding of the impermanent, unsatisfactory, and selfless nature of personal experience. This results in freedom from suffering and inner peace leading, ultimately, to the realization of self liberation. Course Description ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This course is designed for students at all levels of practice. Instruction will be given at the beginning and throughout the course, as well as a format for reporting your meditative experience to the teachers. All participants will have daily scheduled interviews, alternately, with Sayadaw U Pandita and a second Sayadaw. A Dhamma Discourse will be given by Sayadaw every evening. The daily schedule will provide for fourteen hours of alternate sitting and walking meditation periods.f All participants will be asked to observe the eight precepts, which include not eating after noon, unless medically inadvisable. The meals will be nutritionally balanced organic vegetarian meals. Dana ~~~~ Dana, the Pali word for generosity, imparts the spirit in which the teachings of the Buddha are taught. They are freely given. The cost of this course covers only the real expenses, and does not include compensation for the teachers or retreat staff. Teacher and staff support is provided by voluntary donations at the conclusion of the course. Transportation costs for Sayadaw and his entourage for this retreat will also be covered by individual donations. Space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Preference will be given to individuals sitting the entire course. Deposits are refundable until March 1, 1995.
