³ANCIENT EGYPTIANS MAY HAVE USED NUCLEAR ENERGY IN           ³

³nuclear energy in the form of alpha, beta and gamma rays in ³
³the mummification process, said a scientist in remarks      ³
³published Thursday.                                         ³

³The daily Egyptian Gazette quoted Dr. Saeed Muhammed Thabet,³
³a professor at Cairo University's Medical School, as saying ³
³he stumbled on the find while conducting studies at the     ³
³Mummy Gallery at the Cairo Archaeological Museum.           ³

³''A sudden movement of the pointer of a radiometer he was   ³
³holding indicated that the mummies emit rays,'' the Gazette ³
³said.                                                       ³

³''Experiments on 17 mummies from different kingdoms, and    ³
³further studies on the sarcophagi, confirmed the presence of³
³the rays. More evidence emerged when a camera film was      ³
³destroyed by exposure to the radiation,'' it said.          ³

³Inscriptions on the door of the tomb of an ancient Egyptian ³
³pharaoh indicate that ancient Egyptians used a caustic      ³
³substance in the mummification process, the newspaper said. ³

³''Drawings on the tomb wall confirm this and contain an     ³
³explicit display of burns that can be caused by direct      ³
³application of the substance,'' it said.                    ³

³A spokesman at the Cairo University Medical School said     ³
