The day began with the traditional cutting of fruits and the offering of fruits and flowers in the Pagoda, beginning at 6:00AM. After a half-hour sitting and break- fast, all those present assembled in the new Dhamma Hall to recite the Udana and the Patthana. The recitation was followed by the usual 8-9 group sitting. After a 10-minute break, everyone assembled at the southwest corner of the Dhamma Hall for the unveiling of the dedication plaque. The Teachers solicited blessings and drew aside a small curtain which revealed the bronze plaque and the commemorative description. After the unveiling, the Teachers gave a brief talk in the Dhamma Hall. Mother Sayamagyi said she was very happy to see these new buildings; that there was much kusala[1] involved in such an under- taking, and that there would be more kusala to come from this in the future. Sayagyi U Chit Tin reminded us that we had just dedicated the Dhamma Hall in the country that our Teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin, had al- ways wanted to visit and in which he wanted to teach the Buddha Dhamma. He said that Mother Sayamagyi and he had come to the United States to fulfil Sayagyis wishes to spread the Buddha Dhamma throughout North America. Sayagyi U Chit Tin pointed out that with the building of the Pagoda in 1991, the Buddha was established at the Center, and that now, with the Dhamma Hall and the Teachers residence, the Dhamma and the Sangha are also represented here. He spoke of the auspicious location of the Center, at the top of a hill with a commanding view in all direc- tions, and of the beauty of the new buildings. After the Teachers remarks, Mother Sayamagyi asked U Sein Lin, one of the two patrons of IMC-USA, to give a brief talk. U Sein Lin started out by noting that he had known our Teachers since 1945, almost fifty years. He then told a story about the demise of Sayagyi U Ba Khin, wherein he recalled that three days before his death, Sayagyi remarked to Mother Sayamagyi that he would be leaving this world "for good," as he put it, in a very short time. U Sein Lin observed that the words "for good" could have two meanings: the traditional meaning of //forever// and the meaning of //for something better//. Upon hearing this news, Mother Sayamagyi told Sayagyi, in the words of U Sein Lin, that in such an event she would "take care of things here." U Sein Lin remarked that once again the word "here" could have two meanings - at the Center in Rangoon and in this world. He said that in light of subsequent events, both meanings are now seen to be accurate. U Sein Lin then told of how Mother Sayamagyi was sitting in the Pagoda at IMC-Rangoon at the moment of Sayagyis demise and how she saw a flash of lightning, "like a shooting star," at the very moment of his passing. In recounting this event, U Sein Lin remarked on how very close this link is between our Teachers and Sayagyi U Ba Khin and how students from all over the world have benefited beyond measure from the work of our Teachers and of Sayagyi U Ba Khin before them. On behalf of IMC-USA and all the students, Michael Kosman thanked the Teachers for making this great occasion possible and invited them to return soon and often and to stay at the Center for as long as possible. He then thanked IMC-Builders and all those who helped for all their work in building the new Center. Sayagyi U Chit Tin indicated that all the centers are in Sayagyi U Ba Khins tradition and that they will receive all possible appropriate care and dedication. The new Center consists of the Dhamma Yaung Chi Ceti[2] (opened in May of 1991), the new Dhamma Hall, a new kitchen/dining complex, a new dormitory, and the relocated Teachers residence. In addition, the base- ment of the kitchen/dining hall has been divided into three rooms which will be used temporarily for student accommodation until a second dormi- tory can be constructed. Truth Will Triumph [1] meritorious acts, karmically wholesome acts [2] Light of the Dhamma Pagoda ---------------------------------- *CENTRE & GROUP REPORTS* *IMC - HEDDINGTON* A large course was held in July taught by Mother Sayamagyi & Sayagyi U Chit Tin. More than a third of the students attending were new. A further course was held in August taught by regional teacher Mr. Roger Newton which was also well attended, with se- veral new students. Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin were warmly welcomed by students on their return from the USA at the end of September. We are greatly privileged that our revered Teachers have agreed to stay at the IMC UK for a further period. We had an exceptionally good display of roses this summer and were able to offer many beautiful blooms in the Pagoda. The new border with its mixture of traditional herbaceous plants estab- lished itself very quickly and has added colour and variety to the garden - we expect it to do even better next year. The lawns around the Pagoda have now become well established, following much preparation work earlier in the year. Regular maintenance of these garden areas provides a beautiful setting for the Pagoda which many visitors remark on. The Publicity Committee is continuing in its efforts to make the facilities of IMC UK more widely known through intermittent ad- vertising and posters. Many of our Dhamma Dana publications are now electronically pub- lished through global computer networks (e.g. CompuServe, Dhar- manet and others). "What Buddhism is" (three lectures by Sayagyi U Ba Khin) has been a most popular choice amongst net- work users. Students who are interested in more details can contact us at our Email address (see page 8). A number of Dhamma service days have been held in the last months which have been well attended by students and their families. The woodwork on the walkways, guest house and Teachers kitchen has been restained, and many of the doors and windows on the main house repainted in preparation for the coming winter months. We have been concerned for some time about the problem of rising damp in the ground floor ladies bedroom. During the service days the old plaster was removed and a damp proof course in- jected. All improvements to the Centre facilities have been funded on a dana basis. We are very appreciative of the labour dana which is given so willingly on service days and also on a daily basis by those responsible for catering, cleaning and general running and maintenance of the Centre. A second childrens class has now been formed for the younger children aged two upwards which also meets on Sundays. Students continue to benefit from the chanting of various Suttas and Parittas in the Dhamma Hall after the evening sitting. Old students who are not able to attend ten day courses to main- tain their practice are welcome to join courses for the first weekend. *IMC - WA* Ten day courses have been held monthly over the winter period. We have also conducted Anapana weekend courses for new and old students. All courses have been well attended. The childrens Dhamma classes are held each Sunday. The chan- ting of the Patthana and Suttas continues on a regular basis. A maintenance program on the Pagoda is underway. This includes repair to the plaster and painting. With the advent of spring, work on the gardens including spring plantings and maintenance has commenced with a series of "busy bees". The roses have been pruned and the new seasons growth is evident. We are aiming for a magnificent display of blooms in time for the arrival of our Teachers in January 1995. *IMC - USA* Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin arrived in America on August 28th to begin a one-month visit in North America. After a visit to Connecticut, they came to IMC-USA on August 30th and began a ten-day course three days later, on September 2nd. This was the dedication course for the new Dhamma Hall which was very well attended. The new kitchen/dining hall and the new dormi- tory were also inaugurated at this time. A special sitting was held on Sunday September 4th, followed by the unveiling of the dedication plaque and the soliciting of blessings in the Dhamma Hall. The new buildings performed beautifully and are a wonder- ful addition to the Center. With the Pagoda, Dhamma Hall and Teachers residence in place on the property, the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha are now all present at IMC-USA. The Teachers departed Maryland on September 14th and flew to California to teach a ten-day course in Santa Cruz from Septem- ber 16-26. *IMC - NSW* We are now holding courses at the Centre approximately every two months. Many students contribute in all kinds of ways to make this possible, in the absence of a full time manager at the Centre. We are in the course of preparing the February course to be given by our Teachers Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin which is a very special occasion for us. We would appreciate early ad- vice from students who may be considering attending this course, so that appropriate accommodation and other arrangements can be made. We are happy to report that the loan to purchase the 9.6 acres of land upon which the Centre is built has now been paid off. The Trust is very pleased with this progress and is grateful to all those who have supported the Centre over the past five years. Sunday is usually a busy day at the Centre with three group sittings and lunch co-ordinated by the Catering Committee. Various maintenance and garden projects are underway, and the work to maintain our three permanent buildings and three temporary buildings is ongoing. We have decided to undertake the following projects: a) To construct a wall surrounding the Bodhi Tree which is growing well; b) Landscaping the top area to the north of the Pagoda (presently covered in gravel); c) The creation of a shaded dining area outside the kitchen, suitable for meetings and meals. The Trust has invited the Venerable U Jagara Bhivamsa to visit the Centre on Sunday October 16th. U Jagara has been a member of the order of bhikkhus for over 50 years and was present at the two ordination courses in Perth and also at Bodhi-Gaya in India when the invaluable opportunity was given for members of the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Tradition to ordain. *IMC - AUSTRIA* We were delighted to have our teachers Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin here in Austria from August 3rd to the 17th. The course was held from August 5th to 15th and was very well attended by many students. The Banana Bud on the Pagoda has been regilded so it can shine again across the valley as it did at the Opening of the Pagoda. A large number of visitors have enjoyed visiting the Pagoda throughout the summer, some coming in buses from far away and some cycling from surrounding villages and towns. People are very impressed by the outstanding beauty of the Pagoda on top of the hill and this triggers interest in the Buddha and his teachings. A fund has been opened with a donation from Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin for the planting of flowering trees along the path leading to the Pagoda. At the annual general meeting of the Association on August 14th with the Metta and guidance of our Teachers it was decided to start the building of the Dhamma Hall and have it ready to be officially opened in summer 1995 when the teachers are scheduled to return to our Centre. Just in time for the summer course the new shower and toilet block in the main house was ready to be used and the new entrance to the Centre finished. We all greatly benefitted from the stay of our teachers in Austria this summer. *GERMANY/SWITZERLAND* We were happy to welcome Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin to Switzerland in July. They taught a course in La Rouvraie, which was well attended. We thank the Teachers for their kind and patient guidance. On talking day we held the annual meeting of the Swiss asso- ciation, with the Teachers presiding. Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin gave a Dhamma talk in which they emphasised the significance of Pagodas and the need for working together in a harmonious way. The Teachers encouragement with respect to the Centre project was most appreciated. The search for a suit- able place continues. An additional committee is looking in the area of Berne. Preparations are being made for a ten-day course with a regional teacher in the Autumn. The course will take place in Lenzkirch-Kappel, Germany. The German and Swiss groups continue to hold regular meetings and group sittings together. *SINGAPORE* Our group sittings were graced by the presence of Saya U Maung Maung on two occasions. Saya U Maung Maung was in Singapore to seek medical treatment. After each sitting Saya U Maung Maung delivered a short Dhamma talk emphasising the importance of developing good Samadhi before practising Vipassana. Some students asked questions after the talks and all benefited from the questions and answers. We continue to meet every Sunday for group sittings. *THE NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM* Two courses have been held since the last report, the first in June taught by Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin in The Netherlands, and another one taught by regional teacher Mr. Matthijs Schouten in August/September in Belgium. Both courses were very well attended and a large proportion were new students. At the end of the June-course the board of the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Stichting met, with Mother Sayamagyi and Sayagyi U Chit Tin pre- siding. The board members for the coming year were chosen and three new members were welcomed. We continue to hold our meetings and weekly group sittings. *IMC-CANADA* Students in Canada have formed a Trust known as International Meditation Centre, Canada. This organization has recently been registered as a charitable organization by the tax authorities in Canada. IMC-Canada will sponsor Dhamma activities in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin in Canada, and will continue to support the activiites of IMC-USA. *JAPAN* The regional course held in Japan this Spring was successfully completed. The course was well attended by old and new students. The group is planning another course for the Spring of next year. Old and new students continue to attend our bi- monthly group sittings. *DENMARK* The Danish group is slowly becoming more active. The weekly group sittings are well attended and at present we are planning a meditation retreat in the autumn of 1995. *ITALY* The group in Italy meets every Tuesday and Thursday for group sittings at Bresseo ---------------------------------- *Worldwide Contact Addresses in the Tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin* *AUSTRIA:* International Meditation Centre, A-9064 St. Michael/Gurk 6, Austria; Tel: +43 4224 2820, Fax: +43 4224 28204 *EASTERN AUSTRALIA:* International Meditation Centre, Lot 2 Cessnock Road, Sunshine NSW 2264, Australia; Tel: +61 49 705 433, Fax: +61 49 705 749 *UNITED KINGDOM:* International Meditation Centre, Splatts House, Heddington, Calne, Wiltshire SN11 OPE, England; Tel: +44 380 850 238, Fax: +44 380 850 833, Email: CIS, IMC-UK, 100330,3304 *USA:* International Meditation Centre, 438 Bankard Road, Westminster MD 21158, USA; Tel: +1 410 346 7889, Fax: +1 410 346 7133 Email: CIS, IMC-USA, 74163,2452 *Contact address California:* Linda H.
