The George Gallup polling organization notes that "There was a time when members of the clergy were the most respected members of their community. But factors such as the televangelist scandals, political forays by some highly visible clergy, and moral lapses by others have taken their toll on the standing enjoyed by men and women of the cloth." Last month's report by the Gallup organization noted that only 14 percent of respondents rate the ethical standards of the clergy as "very high"; 40 percent use the term "high." Another 34 percent consider the folks on the other side of the altar rail to be average, and 9 percent rate them as "low." Up to 1988, surveys indicated that the clergy "always had ranked first in comparison to a wide range of professions," but have since been knocked out of the top spot by pharmacists. They still enjoy a slight confidence lead ahead of dentists, college teachers, and engineers. In case you HAD to ask, at the bottom of the heap are found senators, congressional representatives, insurance agents, and, as expected, car salesmen. ----------------------------------------------------------- THEISTWATCH An educational service provided by American Atheists, P O Box 140195, Austin, TX 78714-0195, Telephone (512) 458-1244, FAX: (512) 467-9525, BBS: (512) 302-0223, Fidonet 1:382/1006.
