Vedic Perspective Editorial Commentary 7-16-87 If we take a look at modern American culture compared to that of the Vedic culture of the followers of Lord Krishna, we can see some unhealthy trends that point out that American culture is declining. One sign that culture is decling is the acceptance of legalizing abortion. It means that our American culture cannot withstand the pressures to control our sexuality. Before abortion, women and men were joined together in marriage to lawfully and religiously engage in sex and to produce children with nice happy home. But with the ideas of the sixties sexual revolution and the liberation of women, American culture lost its understanding of family and adopted the ideas of sex life simply for pleasure. Fortunately today, many are seeing the disadvantages of free sex and are trying to bring the sexual revolution full circle and reverse the decision to legalize abortion. One such man is Dr. Bernard Nathanson, ex-abortionist and author of the Silent Scream, and who had performed about 75,000 abortions. Dr. Nathanson, however, was responsible for getting abortions legalized in the first place. In one statement, Dr. Nathanson describes how he had accomplished this. In 1968, Dr. Nathanson was one of the founders of the National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws. It took him and his colleages five years to convince American shakers and movers, that legalized abortion was what the majority of what Americans wanted. First Nathanson and his colleages convinced the media that abortion was a sophisticated and enlightened choice. They announced to the media that 60 percent of Americans were in favor of abortion. They had fabricated this figure. Nathanson admits they lied by fabricating that one million abortions were going on illegally at that time. The truth was less than 100,000. They lied when they said 10,000 women each year were dying from those illegal abortions. The truth was only around 200-250. Nathanson says, "Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public." Other lies fabricated by Dr. Nathanson and his colleagues were that, "Most Catholics want abortion law reform." However, most religions oppose abortion. Lastly, they tried to cloud the issue about the beginning of life of the fetus by declaring that it is impossible to scientifically determine when life begins in the womb. Nathanson now admits that in 1973, he became convinced by a new technology that studies fetuses, that life in the womb begins at conception. Nathanson has now become a pro-life advocate. The science of Krishna consciousness does not allow for abortion because devotees of Krishna know that during conception, God has placed a soul inside the womb of the mother. Any attempt to abort the developing child is against the orders of the Lord. Finally, Dr. Nathanson concludes: "Although I am not a formal religionist, I believe with all my heart that there is a divinity of existence which commands us to declare a final and irreversible halt to this infinitely sad and shameful crime against humanity." --Vaishnava Dasa
