Yeah, I know, the name... but this thing is detailed!
"Note that human and chimpanzee (color these and other figures
gray) have an identical sequence of amino acids in the beta chain of
their hemoglobins. The gorilla, however, has a beta chain that
differs from human and chimpanzee by one amino acid. At position 104,
the gorilla hemoglobin contains lysine rather than arginine. The
genetic "code words" that specify lysine are AAA or AAG; that is, the
sequences of bases on the messenger RNA responsible for specifying
position 104 on the hemoglobin is adenine-adenine-adenine (AAA) or
adenine-adenine-guanine (AAG) (Refer back to plate 23). Note also
that the codon for arginine is AGA or AGG. Thus we can infer that a
single mutation - a change in the second nucleotide base of the codon
determining position 104 of the protien chain - can account for the
difference between human and gorilla hemoglobin. This indicates a
very close genetic relationship between human, chimpanzee, and gorilla.
"Now color the three amino acids that differ in gibbon from human,
chimpanzee, and gorilla: aspartic acid at position 87 rather than
threonine, and glutamine rather than proline at position 125. Next
color the eight amino acids that differ in the rehsus monkey and the
nine in the squirrel monkey. Note that the sites differ except for
positions 87 and 125, all of which have glutamine. Note, too, that
the amino acid sequences of the apes are much more similar to humans
than are that of the monkeys."
With some very nice drawings! Not your run of the mill coloring
book... This is an _excellent_ evolution primer.
