Below is my proposal for making debating on t.o. a competitive event. Posters can score points depending on what they induce the creationist (C'ist) they are debating to do or say in the t.o. forum. Email responses do not count. Using the chart below each person can easily keep track of his/her own score and t.o. members could from time to time compare their scores for a given period of time or "race" to reach a certain score. The possibilities are almost limitless. So, submitted for your approval, are my rules for "The talk.origins game". Enjoy! SCORING POINTS ************** "NORMAL" POINTS =============== +2 if the C'ist avoids a direct question (The C'ist must respond to part of the post and omit the question. Posts that are completely ignored score no points.) +4 for each subsequent time you ask and the C'ist ignores the question +5 if the C'ist claims he will answer you, then leaves the group +6 if the C'ist claims he will answer you, then continues to post away while ignoring the question (This scores six points once, not every subsequent post, else those debating Bales would have an unfair advantage.) +1 for every time the C'ist give an irrelevent or non-sensical response (posters debating Antti or Lionel must scale their score by dividing by 3 for this category) +3 for every (new) factual error you catch a C'ist making +7 if, to correct the error, you needed to do library work (For both of the above, the fact must be a fact (*) and not a matter of opinion. Since this is t.o., no points will be gained simply from asserting that evolutiion is fact (too easy). "Library work" will mean you had to go to a source more involved than a introductory text in biology or evolution. Scientists or grad students do not qualify for the +7 in their feild as they have easy access to more involved literature. They can only score +3.) (*) -- I'm talking about easy to verify, unambiguous statements, like horses (in general) have four legs. +0.5 for correcting incorrect "facts" that are old hat +2 for correcting a C'ists logic +4 each time the C'ist makes the the same general mistake (i.e. using "appeal to authority" again, but appealing to a different authority) +5 for pointing out when a C'ist contradicts himself +15 if a C'ists argument comes around full circle, i.e. if, in piling on ad hoc layers of explanation to save his viewpoint, the C'ists reasserts an earlier point which the present ad hoc argument is meant to save +10 for catching a C'ist lying. This includes re-presenting "facts" that have been refuted or logical arguments which have been refuted without the C'ist addressing the criticism. In general, you must show the C'ist is indeed deliberately lying, not just ignorant or stupid. +20 for each time the C'ist repeats the lie +50 for getting a creationist to admit he is lying to further his religious aims (You should ask him how the words "even if you have to lie and weasel like a bastard" somehow got omitted from Jesus' command to "Go and make disciples of men" 8-) (If you are arguing with Ted, you must scale your score by dividing by 10 for the above two categories.) +5 getting a C'ist to admit he was wrong about something (no matter how trivial) +10 for convincing a C'ist in the fact of microevolution (They must be non-believers to start with.) +100 getting Ted to admit he was wrong about something (no matter how trivial -- Hey Ted, what was the name of that author you constantly quote? Is the felt effect of spelling somehow influencing your writing?) +250 for convincing a C'ist of the fact of common descent and modification with descent (This may seem like a lot of points, but I don't think I've ever seen this happen so I made it worth alot.) SPECIAL AWARDS ============== These can only be given to you by others The gut-buster award +6 Every once in awhile, someone cracks a really good joke. Upon seeing one, any t.o. member may bestow this award on the jocular poster. Jokes that are funny at the expense of another may qualify, in addition, for the next category. The white-hot flame award +6 This can be bestowed on any t.o. member by any other in recognition of a truly superior flame. This should be reserved for flames that are truly exceptional; mere scorched-earth, name-calling tirades do not count. The "Ted Badge of Courage" +12 This can only be awarded by Ted, and you can only recieve the points for it once. You score 12 if Ted responds by attacking you personally. For example, if he attempts to ridicule you by making fun of your weight or claiming you must be on drugs to believe whatever it is you believe. The "burn in hell" award +8 This can only be awarded by C'ists. You score six if, in response to a posting of yours, a C'ist claims you are a pawn of Satan, part of a Satanic conspiracy, Satan himself or will burn in hell for your beliefs. PENALTIES ========= -5 for failing to sense when humor is being used -25 if there was a smiley present -15 for posting anything about punk eek without understanding it -50 if a C'ist corrects a factual error of yours (This may seem like a big penalty, but lets face it -- if a C'ist has a better grasp of science than you do, maybe you shouldn't be posting.) -8 for crossposting to other boards when this results in useless threads continuing in talk.origins -16 for crossposting and starting a irrelevant religious thread on t.o. -1 for quoting the entire text of a post, then responding to a single point (unless you are composing a parody of Antti) LOKI POINTS (idea suggested by Richard Harter) =========== Loki points can be scored from or by any member of t.o. This is a good opportunity for lurkers to score big. Fooling the t.o. regulars ------------------------- Occasionally someone posts a real hilarious parody of creationist "thought". Many times, this is met with a flurry of pedantic retribution making the incident even more hilarious. +10 for getting a serious response to a joke theory or argument (-10 for the person duped into responding) +20 for getting a serious response if the post included smileys or specifically mentioned it was a joke (-20 for the dupe) Fooling "expert" creationists ----------------------------- +500 if your bogus theory ends up in creationist literature as a real theory or argument =================================================================== *** SCORING POINTS *** "NORMAL" POINTS =============== +1 for any relevant, accurate quotation of someone who accepts the theory of evolution. This will require a specific reference so that people can check up on you. +2 for any C'ist who can correctly recite the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This is a one per customer award. +2 for any C'ist who can provide a short accurate summary of the Theory of Evolution. (Hint: Changes in allele frequencies over time. Descent with modification.) This is a one per customer award. +2 for any C'ist who can correctly define the word "fact", "theory" and "proof" as they are used by practicing scientists. Once again, a one per customer award. +2 for any C'ist who attempts to explain the geologic column without using either "hydrologic sorting" or an Omphalosian deity. +2 for any C'ist who produces an argument that hasn't been heard in talk.origins in the last six months. These points can only be earned once per argument for each C'ist (otherwise Balesian C'ists, who post, disappear for months at a time, and then pop up again, would be unduly favored). +4 for any C'ist who produces an argument that is NOT already refuted in the Meritt FAQ's. +6 for any C'ist who produces an argument that is NOT already refuted in any of the FAQ's. +10 for any C'ist who produces an argument whose refutation requires some library work by one of the T.O. Irregulars. +2 for any C'ist who provides a logically valid response to a scientific question. +4 for any C'ist who provides a logically sound response to a scientific question. +6 for any C'ist who provides a logically sound response that is supported by scientific evidence to a scientific question. +1 for every time a C'ist, who is reduced to one-line mode, provides a witty riposte. (Witty is defined as any riposte that is distinguishable in logic and content from the type of one-liner that ForTun can produce.) +10 for any C'ist, using philosophy, whose indictment of evolution is not equally an indictment of all science. +20 for correcting another C'ist. (This is worth some points because I have never seen it happen. When someone on the pro-evo side of the fence says something stupid, everyone tells them they are being stupid. But, no matter how stupid, illogical, and/or offensive one C'ist is, none of the other C'ists ever seem to take note of this.) SPECIAL AWARDS ============== These can only be given to you by others The Satanic Colby Award +2 This can be bestowed on any C'ist by any pro-evo person in recognition of a truly humorous article. An example of this would be writing a post that clearly demonstrates Chris Colby is Satan. This can only be awarded if the C'ist can demonstrate that he/she was joking and never meant for his/her post to be taken seriously. The Asbestos Suit Award +6 This can be bestowed on any C'ist by any other in recognition of living and continuing to post after being scorched by any post that won a White Hot Flame Award. Note that to be eligible, the C'ist must demonstrate cognizance of the fact that he/she was indeed the recipient of a truly inferno-like flame. He/she must also post something meaningful (i.e., whining or Tunistic one-liners do not count towards this award). The Game-Day Name-Play Award +12 Any C'ist will receive an automatic 12 points the first time his/her name is used to coin a new word by any of the T.O. Irregulars. Examples would be Balesian and/or Tunistic. Half credit is awarded if the C'ists name is used in a nick name, ala Kalki Dodo. This can only be awarded once per C'ist. The .Sig Prig Award +5 Any C'ist will receive a bonus of 5 points the first time his or her .sig is satirized by any of the T.O. Irregulars. The Medal of Meritt +1 Jim Meritt can award this prize to any C'ist for any reason. Jim can award this prize to a single C'ist as many times as he likes. (I liked the prize name.) The Pepperian Prize +1,000,000 This can only be awarded by Dr. Pepper. You score one million (yep, that's right the big 10^6) if you provide to Dr. Pepper a Scientific Theory of Creationism. Dr. Pepper is the sole judge of what is scientific, but helpful guidelines are that the proposed Theory of Creation be predictive and not contradicted by any of the available evidence. (Just in case any C'ist remains confused, Chapter 1 of Genesis is not a scientific theory.) The Nobel Prize in Biology +0 (but you do get some cash, and a nice medal) This can only be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Science. This is the logical next step after the Pepperian Prize. If you truly do have a scientific Theory of Creation, and it out competes evolution, you are a shoo-in for this award. PENALTIES ========= -2 for equating evolution with atheism. -2 for mentioning a conspiracy of scientists. -4 for claiming that evolution is the tool of Satan. -1 for whining in general. -2 for whining about how nasty everyone is on talk.origins. -2 for whining about how C'ists are not free to express their views. The C'ist can mitigate this point loss and gain +8 points, however, if he/she can explain how their views are being suppressed even though he/she has just posted them to the worldwide readership of the Net. -1 for evangelizing. -2 for unknowingly telling a falsehood. (An example of this would be including an inaccurate quote taken from a C'ist source in one of your posts.) -5 for knowingly telling a falsehood. (An example of this would be fabricating a quote from Niles Eldredge by conflating partial quotes separated by a couple of pages in a book.) -10 for defending a knowingly told falsehood. (An example would be claiming after your fabricated Eldredge quote was found out, that you didn't misrepresent Eldredge, because that was what Eldredge meant even though he didn't actually say any such thing.) -8 for crossposting to other boards when this results in useless threads continuing in talk.origins -16 for crossposting and starting a irrelevant religious thread on t.o. -1 for quoting the entire text of a post, then responding to a single point. -2 per month for each month of inactivity that elapses between consecutive posts. -5 for trying to support your arguments with any scientific theory other than evolution that the C'ist hasn't the first clue about (e.g., chaos and information theory). -25 for claiming "I'm only looking for information" at the end of a truly unctious piece of drivel. -- Matt Brinkman brinkman@edseq1.llnl.gov
