Janet Jackson performed on stage with her brothers at the age of seven. At ten, she acted in the TV series "Good Times" and was later seen in "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Fame." She released her first album, JANET JACKSON, in 1982 and her second, DREAM STREET, in 1984, but neither of these records was notably successful. Then, in 1985, Jackson turned to the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (formerly of the Time) for the album CONTROL, which, ironically, emphasized the artist's new maturity and independence, even though most of the songs were co-compositions of the three. CONTROL was a massive hit: it topped the charts, selling more than four million copies, and spawned five Top Ten hits, including the #1 "When I Think of You." The followup, RHYTHM NATION 1814, did even better, spawning seven Top Ten hits, among them the #1s "Miss You Much," "Escapade," and "Black Cat." In 1991 Jackson signed a new recording contract with Virgin Records for a reported $32 million. ~ William Ruhlmann, The youngest of the notorious Jackson brood, Janet performed on the CBS summer series, "The Jacksons," in 1977, doing humorous caricatures of Sonny & Cher and Mae West & W. C. Fields with brother Randy. This led to regular roles on "Good Times," "Different Strokes," and "Fame." Though she possesses a lightweight vocal instrument, Jackson is a stringent performer. She signed a 35 million dollar recording contract with Virgin Records in 1990. ~ Bil Carpenter, ---------- Related Artists ----------- Jacksons, The Richard, Cliff Abdul, Paula Carey, Mariah Madonna ---------- Roots & Influences ---------- Cher West, Mae Birthdate & Place : May 16, 1966 Gary, IN AMG Artist ID # : P000004572 Chronological Album List |Date| Label | Number |R S T|Rating --------------------------------+----+----------+--------+-----+------ Janet. |1993|Virgin | |R | Escapade |1993|A&M |1490 | | Good Rhythm: Compilation |1990|A&M |8409 | | Rhythm Nation: Video |1989|A&M |61900 | | Rhythm Nation 1814 |1989|A&M |3920 |R S | BestA Black Cat |1989|A&M |12343 | | Control the Remixes |1987|A&M |1 | S | OK Control I |1987|Pioneer |22085 | | Control - Part 2 |1987|A&M |1102 | | Control - Part 1 |1986|A&M |1101 | | Control |1986|A&M |3905 |R S |+BestG Dream Street |1984|A&M |4962 |R S | OK Janet Jackson |1982|A&M |4907 |R S | OK That's the Way Love Goes |Z |Capitol |12654 | | Janet |Z |Capitol |87825 |R | Fast Girls |Z |A&M |2927 | | Alright |Z |A&M |1479 | | All-Music Guide Album Details (Alphabetical Order) ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Alright Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : not rated yet Genre : Rock Type : single AMG ID : R000010036 --------- Album Releases --------- CS A&M TS-1479 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Black Cat Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : not rated yet Genre : Rock Type : single Date : 1989 (release) AMG ID : R000010037 --------- Album Releases --------- CD A&M 12343 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Control Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : Best-of-Genre (First Pick) Charts : Billboard #001, entered Mar 8 , 1986, on charts 106 weeks Genre : Rock Time : 41:16 min Date : 1986 (release) AMG ID : R000010042 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD A&M 75021-3905-2 1986 LP A&M 5106 CS A&M 75021-3905-4 1986 LP A&M 75021-3905-1 CD A&M 3905 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis production includes "What Have You Done for Me Lately," "Nasty," and "Let's Wait Awhile." ~ Bil Carpenter Jam and Lewis tailor their contemporary dance-pop to the emerging personality of Jackson, who is attempting to take "Control" of her life on this record. In the course of that attempt, she comes across as an aggressive, independent woman, notably on "What Have You Done for Me Lately." But the album is primarily a production showcase; it may be tailored to Jackson's persona, but the real artists are Jam and Lewis. ~ William Ruhlmann What an assertion of independence and post-adolescent self-discovery this is! Aided and abetted by the super production of Jam & Lewis, CONTROL is a melange of contemporary pop stylings that never loses its danceability nor sacrifices quality. ~ John Dougan ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Janet Jackson ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Control - Part 1 Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : not rated yet Genre : Rock Type : video Date : 1986 (release) AMG ID : R000086401 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1986 A&M 1101 A&M 61101 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Control - Part 2 Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : not rated yet Genre : Rock Type : video Date : 1987 (release) AMG ID : R000086402 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1987 A&M 1102 A&M 61102 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Control I Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : not rated yet Genre : Rock Type : video Date : 1987 (release) AMG ID : R000086400 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- Pioneer 22085 1987 Pioneer Artists Video 195 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Control the Remixes Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : OK Genre : Rock Date : 1987 (release) AMG ID : R000041450 --------- Album Releases --------- 1987 LP A&M 1 ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Janet Jackson ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Dream Street Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : OK Charts : Billboard #147, entered Oct 27, 1984, on charts 006 weeks Genre : Rock Date : 1984?) It traces the history of an affair from steamy passion to betrayal to steamy passion to liberation to steamy passion. It has the same beat-heavy propulsiveness as RHYTHM NATION and CONTROL, although the beats themselves aren't quite as heavy this time around. It's as if Jam, Lewis and Jackson decided that a softening or muffling of the rhythms would be more sensuous. The album gets off strongly with four songs that blend love chatter and body-shaking rhythms, beginning with the delicate "That's the Way Love Is" and ending with the pounding "This Time," featuring wordless operatic flourishes from Kathleen Battle. There are many pop pleasures to be found elsewhere - and good, clean, pure ones at that.~Ron Givens, Stereo Review ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Janet Jackson Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : OK Charts : Billboard #063, entered Nov 20, 1982, on charts 025 weeks Genre : Rock Date : 1982 (release) AMG ID : R000010040 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD A&M 75021-4907-2 CS A&M 75021-4907-4 1983 LP A&M 64907 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- Debut album of youth-oriented pop with "Young Love," a minor disco hit. ~ Bil Carpenter ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Janet Jackson ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Janet. There are good moments here, but it is marred by the torturously long running time and the intros that clutter the entire album. With a CD player, it is possible to program these excesses out and enjoy JANET. as a solid successor to CONTROL and RHYTHM NATION 1814. ~ All-Music Guide ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Rhythm Nation 1814 Artist : Janet Jackson Rating : Best-of-Artist Charts : Billboard #001, entered Oct 7 , 1989, on charts 108 weeks Rock & Roll Disc #3.5/4 Genre : Rock Time : 64:27 min Date : 1989 (release) AMG ID : R000010043 --------- Album Releases --------- CD A&M 75021-3920-2 1989 CS A&M 75021-3920-4 CD A&M 3920 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- ... the disc is conceived as a suite with spoken segues linking many of the tracks, and there is a deliberate sense of wholeness.
