All-Music Guide Biography
Michael's baby sister has racked up some huge numbers on her own,
becoming second only to Madonna among top-selling female singers. ~
Dan Heilman
Janet Jackson is the ninth and last child in the musically talented
Jackson family that includes the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, and
Jermaine Jackson. Janet Jackson performed on stage with her brothers
at the age of seven. At ten, she acted in the TV series "Good Times"
and was later seen in "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Fame." She released
her first album, JANET JACKSON, in 1982 and her second, DREAM STREET,
in 1984, but neither of these records was notably successful. Then,
in 1985, Jackson turned to the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry
Lewis (formerly of the Time) for the album CONTROL, which,
ironically, emphasized the artist's new maturity and independence,
even though most of the songs were co-compositions of the three.
CONTROL was a massive hit: it topped the charts, selling more than
four million copies, and spawned five Top Ten hits, including the #1
"When I Think of You." The followup, RHYTHM NATION 1814, did even
better, spawning seven Top Ten hits, among them the #1s "Miss You
Much," "Escapade," and "Black Cat." In 1991 Jackson signed a new
recording contract with Virgin Records for a reported $32 million. ~
William Ruhlmann,
The youngest of the notorious Jackson brood, Janet performed on the
CBS summer series, "The Jacksons," in 1977, doing humorous
caricatures of Sonny & Cher and Mae West & W. C. Fields with brother
Randy. This led to regular roles on "Good Times," "Different
Strokes," and "Fame." Though she possesses a lightweight vocal
instrument, Jackson is a stringent performer. She signed a 35 million
dollar recording contract with Virgin Records in 1990. ~ Bil
Carpenter,

Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis production includes "What Have You Done for Me
Lately," "Nasty," and "Let's Wait Awhile." ~ Bil Carpenter
Jam and Lewis tailor their contemporary dance-pop to the emerging
personality of Jackson, who is attempting to take "Control" of her
life on this record. In the course of that attempt, she comes across
as an aggressive, independent woman, notably on "What Have You Done
for Me Lately." But the album is primarily a production showcase; it
may be tailored to Jackson's persona, but the real artists are Jam and
Lewis. ~ William Ruhlmann
What an assertion of independence and post-adolescent self-discovery
this is! Aided and abetted by the super production of Jam & Lewis,
CONTROL is a melange of contemporary pop stylings that never loses its
danceability nor sacrifices quality. ~ John Dougan

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
The third album on which Janet Jackson has collaborated with superstar
producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, JANET, has an erotic
architecture. It traces the history of an affair from steamy passion
to betrayal to steamy passion to liberation to steamy passion. It
has the same beat-heavy propulsiveness as RHYTHM NATION and CONTROL,
although the beats themselves aren't quite as heavy this time around.
It's as if Jam, Lewis and Jackson decided that a softening or muffling
of the rhythms would be more sensuous. The album gets off strongly
with four songs that blend love chatter and body-shaking rhythms,
beginning with the delicate "That's the Way Love Is" and ending with
the pounding "This Time," featuring wordless operatic flourishes from
Kathleen Battle. There are many pop pleasures to be found elsewhere -
and good, clean, pure ones at that.~Ron Givens, Stereo Review

Janet Jackson returns with JANET., a long (75 minutes), ambitious
album declaring her sexual maturity. There are good moments here, but
it is marred by the torturously long running time and the intros that
clutter the entire album. With a CD player, it is possible to program
these excesses out and enjoy JANET. as a solid successor to CONTROL
and RHYTHM NATION 1814. ~ All-Music Guide
