Frontperson Grace Slick (b Oct 30, 1939) was a more-than-willing outspoken mouthpiece.,Musically, the band ranged from reflective acoustic gems (revealing their folk origins) to explosive excursions into psychedelia. Their performance of "Volunteers" at the legendary Woodstock festival was a highlight.,At the top of the 70s, Jefferson Airplane formed the RCA-distributed Grunt Records, on which they released their subsequent albums as well as albums by Papa John Creach and Hot Tuna. During this time, their counterculture tirades began to sound as tiring as the nagging, parental "Establishment.",In 1974 they become the Jefferson Starship. Their 1975 album RED OCTOPUS became their biggest-selling album to date, generating lead singer Marty Balin's #3 hit "Miracles." Shortly thereafter, Grace Slick took a leave absence until 1981. Singer Mickey Thomas (formerly with Elvin Bishop) joined in 1979 and helped usher the band into further mainstream rock-radio success.,After long-time band leader Paul Kantner left Jefferson Starship in 1984, the band dropped the first word in its name. At that point it consisted of Mickey Thomas, Grace Slick, guitarist Craig Chaquico (b 1955), bassist Pete Sears, and drummer Donny Baldwin. This unit immediately scored with the #1 hits "We Built This City" and "Sara" and the million-selling album KNEE DEEP IN THE HOOPLA. Sears had left by the time of the 1987 followup, NO PROTECTION, which featured the #1 "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and the Top Ten "It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)." Slick then departed, and the remaining trio recruited keyboard player Mark Moragan and bassist Brett Bloomfield for the 1989 album LOVE AMONG THE CANNIBALS, which featured the Top 20 hit "It's Not Enough." In 1991, when RCA released a Starship greatest-hits album, the one new track on the album had been recorded by Thomas and studio musicians, leading to doubt that Starship remained a functioning band. ~ William Ruhlmann, ---------- Related Artists ----------- Slick, Grace & the Great Society Hot Tuna Jefferson Starship Quicksilver Messenger Service Balin, Marty KBC Band, The ---------- Roots & Influences ---------- Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Buffalo Springfield 60s Folk music ---------- Bibliography ---------- Rowe, Barbara |Grace Slick: The Biography |New York AMG Artist ID # : P000004603 Chronological Album List |Date| Label | Number |R S T|Rating --------------------------------+----+----------+--------+-----+------ At Their Best |1993|RCA |66231 | | Jefferson Airplane Loves You |1992|RCA |61110 |R | Good White Rabbit & Other Hits |1990|RCA |2078 | | Poor Jefferson Airplane |1989|Epic |45271 |R | Poor Collection |1988|Castle |200 | | 2400 Fulton Street - an Antholo|1987|RCA |5724 |R |+BestA Nuclear Furniture |1984|Grunt |4921 | S T| OK Rock Galaxy |1983|RCA |43302 | | Winds of Change |1982|Grunt |4372 | S T| OK Radio Special Volume 19 |1982|RCA |4569 | | Modern Times |1981|RCA |3848 |R S T| Good Crown of Creation /Volunteers |1980|RCA |43302 | | Good Best of Jefferson Airplane |1980|RCA |42727 | S T| Gold |1979|RCA |3247 |R S T| Good Freedom at Point Zero |1979|Grunt |3452 |R S T| Good Earth |1978|Grunt |12515 |R S T| OK Flight Log (1966-1976) |1977|RCA |3766 | S T| BestA Spitfire |1976|Grunt |1557 | S T| Good Red Octopus |1975|RCA |0999 |R S T|+BestG Elephant Mountain |1975|Grunt |4510 | S | Early Flight |1974|RCA |0437 |R S T| OK Dragon Fly |1974|RCA |3796 | S T| Thirty Seconds over Winterland |1973|RCA |0147 |R S T| OK Long John Silver |1972|Grunt |1007 | S T| OK Bark |1971|Grunt |1001 | S T| OK Worst Of |1970|RCA |4459 |R S T|+BestA Blows Against the Empire |1970|RCA |3868 | | Good Volunteers |1969|Mobile Fid|540 |R | Good Bless Its Pointed Little Head |1969|RCA |4133 |R S T| Good Crown of Creation |1968|Mobile Fid|523 |R S T| Good Surrealistic Pillow |1967|RCA |3766 |R S T|+BestG After Bathing at Baxter's |1967|RCA |4545 |R S T| Good Takes Off |1966|RCA |3584 |R S T| Good Surrealistic Airplane |Z |RCA |? | | Live at the Monterey Festival |Z |Magnum |74 | | Definitive Concert |Z |Lightyear |75135 | | All-Music Guide Album Details (Alphabetical Order) ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : 2400 Fulton Street - an Anthology Artist : Jefferson Airplane Rating : Best-of-Artist (First Pick) Charts : Billboard #138, entered Apr 18, 1987, on charts 009 weeks Genre : Rock Time : 131:47 min Type : compilation Date : Mar ??, 1987 (release) AMG ID : R000010317 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD RCA 5724-2-R 1987 LP RCA 90036 CS RCA 5724-4-R ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- A more-than-adequate retrospective on the group (at least until the boxed set anticipated for late 1992 arrives), with every major song and a lot of oddball favorites as well, all remastered from sources far superior to those used on the original albums. A rough but very representative live album that succeeds where the BAXTER'S album failed in capturing the mood of psychedelic music in performance. The music is intense and driving, and the only unfortunate element of the album is that it dates from a period after Marty Balin's songs had largely been dropped from their set. ~ Bruce Eder A rough, but representative live album that more or less captures what their shows were like, although the song choice could've been stronger. ~ Bruce Eder ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Marty Balin - Guitar, Vocal Jack Casady - Bass Spencer Dryden - Drums Paul Kantner - Guitar, Vocal Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar, Vocal Grace Slick - Keyboards, Vocal -------- Album Tracks -------- Clergy 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds Somebody To Love Fat Angel Rock Me Baby Other Side Of The Life It's No Secret Plastic Fantastic Lover Turn Out The Lights Bear Melt ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Blows Against the Empire Artist : Jefferson Starship Rating : Good Genre : Rock Date : 1970 (release) AMG ID : R000010303 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD RCA 3868-2-R 1970 CS RCA 3868-4-R ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Collection Artist : Jefferson Airplane Rating : not rated yet Genre : Rock Type : compilation Date : 1988 (release) AMG ID : R000041740 --------- Album Releases --------- 1988 LP Castle 200 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Crown of Creation Artist : Jefferson Airplane Rating : Good Charts : Billboard #006, entered Sep 7 , 1968, on charts 025 weeks Rock & Roll Disc #3/4 Genre : Rock Time : 38:10 min Date : Sep ??, 1968 (release) AMG ID : R000010298 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD Mobile Fidelity UDCD-523 CD RCA 4058-2-R CS RCA 4058-4-R 1968 LP RCA 4058 CD Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab UDCD-523 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- ... a sort of high water mark of the band's psychedelic era. The highlight is a live version of the science-fiction anthem "Have You Seen the Saucers." ~ Bruce Eder A well-produced live document of the band in almost its final form.
