Favourite albums & such among [Echosians] Date: Thu, 7 Mar 91 20:11:30 CST From: Daniel Rench To: eclipse@reef.cis.ufl.edu Subject: The Great Pink Floyd Poll: RESULTS As promised, here are the results of the great Pink Floyd poll. If you recall my original post, I said I would use rankings as tie breakers. I abandoned that and left ties as is. It doesn't make much of a difference. The number in parenthesis after a title is the number of votes it got. Without further ado, here it is: Best Pink Floyd album 1. Dark Side of the Moon (30) 2. Wish You Were Here (28) 3. The Wall (23) 4. Meddle (18) 5. Animals (17) 6. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (13) 7. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (8) 8. Obscured by Clouds (7) 9. The Final Cut (5) 10. Delicate Sound of Thunder, Atom Heart Mother (tie, 4) I figured it would be a close race between DSOTM, WYWH, and the Wall, but I thought WYWH would prevail. And up until a few days ago, it had a healthy lead. Then came a bunch of DSOTM votes right at the end. receiving one or more votes: More (3), Relics (2), Ummagumma (2), A Saucerful of Secrets (1), Zabriskie Point (1) Best Pink Floyd Song 1. Comfortably Numb (24) 2. Echoes (20) 3. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (13) 4. Time (12) 5. Wish You Were Here (11) 6. One of These Days (7) 7. Learning to Fly (6) 8. Welcome to the Machine, Money, Dogs (tie, 5) It was no contest. "Comfortably Numb" led from the beginning to the end. "Echoes" was the only one that came close. Interesting note: probably the most popular Pink Floyd track ever, "Another Brick in the Wall part 2," got NO VOTES (well, it got one vote as a solo track from the Berlin promo disc, but that doesn't count here). Another notable no-vote getter: "Young Lust." Other songs that got more than 2 votes: 4: Sorrow, Run Like Hell, Have a Cigar, Free Four 3: Astronomy Domine, On the Turning Away, Careful With That Axe Eugene Best solo album 1. Radio KAOS: Roger Waters (15) 2. The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking: Roger Waters (11) 3. David Gilmour: David Gilmour (10) 4. About Face: David Gilmour (9) 5. When the Wind Blows: Soundtrack featuring Roger Waters Barrett: Syd Barrett (tie, 5) 7. The Wall Live in Berlin: Roger Waters The Madcap Laughs: Syd Barrett The Final Cut: Roger Waters with Pink Floyd (tie, 4) As you can see by the vote totals, not as many responded to this category, but the clear winner was Radio KAOS. Waters did quite well here, having the #2, #5 and two of the #7's. receiving more than one vote: Wet Dream: Richard Wright, Profiles: Mason and Fenn, Opel: Syd Barrett A Momentary Lapse of Reason: Gilmour and Mason with Wright (2) Best solo song 1. There's No Way Out of Here: David Gilmour/David Gilmour The Tide is Turning: Roger Waters/Radio KAOS (tie, 7) 3. The Powers That Be: Roger Waters/Radio KAOS (6) 4. Murder: David Gilmour/About Face Baby Lemonade: Syd Barrett/Barrett (tie, 4) 6. 4:41 AM (Sexual Revolution): Roger Waters/The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking Who Needs Information: Roger Waters/Radio KAOS (tie, 3) "There's No Way Out of Here" and "The Tide is Turning" were neck-and-neck the whole way, and that's how it ended. I was hoping to see "Dark Globe" up there, but it only got one other vote besides my own. Oh well. receiving more than 1 vote: Radio Waves, Octopus, Dark Globe, Folded Flags, Lie for a Lie, Comfortably Numb (Berlin), You Know I'm Right, Golden Hair, Not Now John, 5:01 AM (The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking), The Final Cut Best Bootleg There are a lot of single vote getters in this category, so instead of ranking them, here are the boots that got more than one vote: 3 votes: Rhapsody in Pink, The Wall in New York triple LP 2 votes: The Embryo, Bytes of the Talisman, Dark Side of the Moo, Libest Spacement Monitor, Kahoutek (Best of Live '72) Worst Pink Floyd album 1. Ummagumma (12) 2. The Final Cut (9) 3. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (7) 4. A Saucerful of Secrets, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (tie, 6) 6. Obscured By Clouds (5) 7. Atom Heart Mother (4) 8. Relics, Animals (tie, 3) Unfortunately, a lot of people decided not to cast any "worst" votes. But enough did vote here, with some interesting results. Ummagumma "won," although some people specifically said they didn't like sides 3 and 4 (disc 2 of the CD set) and that sides 1 and 2 were really good (or at least not as bad as the other record). The next three down are somewhat predictable; the Final Cut for the people who don't like Waters dominated PF, Piper for those who don't like Syd dominated PF, and Momentary Lapse for the ones who don't like Gilmour dominated PF. No worst votes went to DSOTM or WYWH (the Wall got two; one for the original, and one for Berlin). receiving more than one vote: Works, Meddle, A Collection of Great Dance Songs (2) Worst Pink Floyd Song There was a lot of diversity in this category, and a large number of people chose not to vote in this category. Also, a few people said things like "Anything from the Final Cut," but I had no way of counting these votes. But there was a clear winner in this category: "Dogs of War." Dogs of War (8) 3 votes: The Grand Visier's Garden Party, Seamus, On the Turning Away, Absolutely Curtains 2 votes: The Fletcher Memorial, Several Species of Small Furry Animals..., Not Now John, Have a Cigar, Don't Leave Me Now, Corporal Clegg Apples & Oranges, Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast Worst solo album 1. Radio KAOS: Roger Waters (7) 2. The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking: Roger Waters Music From the Body: Waters and Geesin (tie, 6) 4. The Wall Live in Berlin: Roger Waters Fictitious Sports: Nick Mason (tie, 4) 6. The Final Cut: Roger Waters with Pink Floyd (3) 7. About Face: David Gilmour (2) Looks a lot like the "Best Solo Album" list, doesn't it? Worst Solo Song Not many votes here, and the votes I did get were quite diverse. The only song to get more than 2 votes was "Radio Waves," with 3 (Waters leads yet another category). Again, there were some uncountable entries like "Anything from the Body." These songs got 2 votes: 4:30 AM (Apparently They Were Travelling Abroad) (Roger Waters) Comfortably Numb (Van Morrison with Roger Waters) Blue Light (David Gilmour) The Final Cut (Roger Waters with Pink Floyd) Favorite bands/groups/artists other than Pink Floyd 1. Beatles, Led Zeppelin (15) 3. Rush (11) 4. Genesis (4)/Peter Gabriel (5) (total: 9) 5. Yes/Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, Jethro Tull (tie, 5) 7. XTC, U2, Queen, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits Bauhaus/Peter Murphy/Love & Rockets (tie, 4) It was Beatles & Zeppelin all the way. I hope I don't offend any Genesis or Peter Gabriel fans by putting them together, but some people put their votes together for related artists (like Yes/ABWH, for example). receiving 3 votes: The Who, The Soft Boys/Robyn Hitchcock, The Doors Queensryche, Jimi Hendrix Well that's it. Thanks to the 53 people (not including myself) who voted. It was fun putting this together. Maybe we'll do this again somtime.
