During their rise to prominence as album rock kings in the mid 70s, Aerosmith managed to produce an impressive collection of hard-rock classics like "Dream On," "Walk This Way," "Back in the Saddle," and "Sweet Emotion.",By the end of the 70s, FM album-rock had become a cynical stale format, and arena rock groups like Aerosmith became the subject of derision among arbiters of the ascending punk and new-wave movements. By then, ensuing personal conflicts and drug problems had weakened Aerosmith's creative power, anyway.,Nevertheless, Aerosmith had the good fortune to make the most of a second chance at success. This was fueled by two very different sources. Rap artists Run-DMC scored a huge hit version of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" in 1986, and the rise of FM classic-rock radio fed a market nostalgic for something more edgy and organic than synth-pop acts like Tears for Fears, Wham!, and Duran Duran.,The newly sober Aerosmith seized the moment and produced two highly successful albums with PERMANENT VACATION and PUMP, which ranks with ROCKS as their best work. ~ Rick Clark ---------- Related Artists ----------- Run DMC Guns n' Roses AC/DC Perry Project, Joe Deep Purple Thin Lizzy Rett ---------- Roots & Influences ---------- Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Led Zeppelin Waters, Muddy Diddley, Bo Joplin, Janis Hendrix, Jimi ---------- Bibliography ---------- Putterford, Whatt |Fall and Rise of Aerosmith, T|Omnibus AMG Artist ID # : P000003508 Chronological Album List |Date| Label | Number |R S T|Rating --------------------------------+----+----------+--------+-----+------ Livin' on the Edge |1993|Geffen |21821 | | Get a Grip |1993|Geffen |24455 |R | Pandora's Box |1991|Columbia |46209 |R | OK Things That Go Pump |1990|David Geff|38172 | | Things That Go Pump |1990| | | | Making of Pump, The |1990|Sony Music|49064 |R | Good Video 3x5 |1989|David Geff|38146 | | Pump |1989|Geffen |24254 |R S |+BestA Live Texas Jam '78 |1988|Sony Music|49013 |R | Good Gems |1988|Columbia |44487 | S | OK Video Scrapbook |1987|CBS |5229 | | Permanent Vacation |1987|Geffen |24162 |R S | BestA Classics Live 2 |1987|Columbia |40855 | S | OK Classics Live |1986|Columbia |40855 | S | OK Done with Mirrors |1985|Geffen |24091 | S T| OK Rock in a Hard Place |1982|Columbia |38061 | S T| Poor Greatest Hits |1980|Columbia |36865 |R S T|+BestG First Decade |1980|Columbia | | | OK Night in the Ruts |1979|Columbia |36050 | S T| Poor Live Bootleg |1978|Columbia |53045 | S T| OK Draw the Line |1977|Columbia |34856 | S T| OK Rocks |1976|Columbia |34165 |R S T| BestA Pure Gold from Rock & Roll's Go|1976|Columbia |187 | | OK Toys in the Attic |1975|Columbia |33479 |R S T| BestA Get Your Wings |1974|Columbia |32847 |R S T| Good Aerosmith |1973|Columbia |32005 |R S T| Good Once Is Enough |Z |David Geff|20751 | | OK Interview-Talk This Way |Z |Arabesque |4032 | | All-Music Guide Album Details (Alphabetical Order) ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Aerosmith Artist : Aerosmith Rating : Good Charts : Billboard #021, entered Oct 13, 1973, on charts 059 weeks Genre : Rock Date : 1973 (release) AMG ID : R000000167 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD Columbia CK-32005 CS Columbia PCT-32005 1973 LP Columbia KC-32005 LP Columbia 32005 CD CBS 32005 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- The debut from this Boston band shows a sensitive side with their best-known ballad, "Dream On." AMG ID : R000168816 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD Geffen 24455 1993 Geffen 24455 CD Geffen 24530 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- Early reports on GET A GRIP had the label forcing Aerosmith back into the studio to add some hits to the album. It's unclear what tracks were tinkered with on the final version of GET A GRIP, but the end result is a fitfully entertaining album. The problem is that Aerosmith wants it both ways -- it wants artistic respect (hence, "Living on the Edge") while keeping adolescent fans in their corner ("Get a Grip" and "Eat the Rich"). It's a studied performance -- it sounds like what an Aerosmith album should sound like, which is why parts of it tend to be boring. But there ARE parts of the album that sound good ("Eat the Rich," in particular) and it should satisfy fans, even if it isn't as strong as ROCKS, TOYS IN THE ATTIC, or PUMP. ~ All-Music Guide Quite frankly, I was surprised by the four stars myself, but in the field of commercial, accessible hard rock with a sting, Aerosmith continues to write the book. These Boston vets may show a lot of treadwear in their faces, but they continue to build and refine on the foundation of previous post-rehab releases PERMANENT VACATION and PUMP IT UP. Memorable songs, razor-sharp playing and Steve Tyler's voice in peak gnarly form - "Get A Grip's" combo of energy and chops makes most of today's hard rock whiz-kids sound like they're the washed up old fogeys. The group continues to expand on the streetlevel sociology of PUMP'S "Janie's Got A Gun" with the triad "Eat The Rich", "Line Up", and single "Livin' On The Edge". Not that you'd want to quote the lyrics as poetry or anything, but - hey - at least the guys aren't always thinking below the waist anymore. Now if they could only wean themselves of the juvenile, sexist videos... ~Roch Parisien ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Greatest Hits Artist : Aerosmith Rating : Best-of-Genre (First Pick) Charts : Billboard #053, entered Nov 29, 1980, on charts 016 weeks Genre : Rock Time : 37:06 min Type : compilation Date : 1980 (release) AMG ID : R000000175 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1980 CD Columbia CK-36865 1980 CS Columbia PCT-36865 CD CBS 36865 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- A solid collection of hits, including their stellar Beatles remake "Come Together." In spite of the implications, THE MAKING OF PUMP is merely a document of a band slogging through the writing and recording (and re-writing and re-recording) process of making an album. Some of it is fascinating, particularly the squabbles among the band members, and the scenes in which producer Bruce Fairburn and A&R man John Koladner are giving guidance. At close to two hours, THE MAKING OF PUMP might get a little long, but studio junkies and hardcore fans of the band will like it. Videos of "The Other Side" and "What It Takes" are included, but this is not a collection of their videos. ~ Rick Clark ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Night in the Ruts Artist : Aerosmith Rating : Poor Charts : Billboard #014, entered Dec 1 , 1979, on charts 019 weeks Genre : Rock Time : 35:40 min Date : 1979 (release) AMG ID : R000000174 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1979 CD Columbia CK-36050 1979 CS Columbia PCT-36050 LP Columbia 36050 CD CBS 36050 ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Aerosmith - Producer Lew Delgotto - Sax (baritone) Tom Hamilton Joey Kramer Gary Lyons - Producer, Engineer Lou Marini - Sax (tenor) Joe Perry Barry Rogers - Trombone Steven Tyler - hrc/k/b/per Brad Whitford George Young - Sax (alto) -------- Album Tracks -------- Remember Walking In The Sand Reefer Head Woman Cheese Cake Mia No Surprise Three Mile Smile Chiquita Think About It Bone To Bone ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Once Is Enough Artist : Aerosmith Rating : OK Genre : Rock AMG ID : R000000166 --------- Album Releases --------- CS David Geffen Co. 4-20751 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Pandora's Box Artist : Aerosmith Rating : OK Charts : Billboard #045, entered Dec 7 , 1991, on charts 009 weeks Rock & Roll Disc #4/4.5 Genre : Rock Time : 223:55 min Type : compilation Date : 1991 (release) AMG ID : R000000183 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1991 CD Columbia C3K-46209 1991 CS Columbia C3T-46209 CD CBS 46209 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- With all but five of these 52 songs hailing from the 70s, this stuff is chronologically speaking, closer to Woodstock than it is to Guns N' Roses. ~ Arsenio Orteza, Rock & Roll Disc. ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Permanent Vacation Artist : Aerosmith Rating : Best-of-Artist Charts : Billboard #011, entered Sep 19, 1987, on charts 067 weeks Genre : Rock Time : 51:46 min Date : 1987 (release) AMG ID : R000000180 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1987 CD Geffen 2-24162 1987 CS Geffen M5G-24162 LP Geffen 24162 CD Geffen 24162 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- On their first major success after choosing the clean and sober route and switching to Geffen Records, Aerosmith begins to regain its rock edge with "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" and "Rag Doll." ~ Donna DiChario ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Bruce Fairbairn - Producer Mike Frastr - Engineer Tom Hamilton - Bass (electric) Joey Kramer - Drums Joe Perry - Guitar, Vocal (background) Bob Rock - Engineer Steven Tyler - v/p/hrc Brad Whitford - Guitar ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Pump Artist : Aerosmith Rating : Best-of-Artist (First Pick) Charts : Billboard #005, entered Sep 30, 1989, on charts 110 weeks Genre : Rock Time : 45:37 min Date : 1989 (release) AMG ID : R000000182 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- 1989 CD Geffen 2-24254 1989 CS Geffen M5G-24254 1989 LP Geffen 24254 CD Geffen 24254 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- Loaded with great tunes, from the risque "Love in an Elevator" to the controversial "Janie's Got a Gun" to the melodic "What It Takes."
