Here's a follow-up on the Illuminati BBS... ================= BEGIN stuff from rec.games.board =================== >What was the bust related to? you mention the "911" case..but >you don't say what it is. The 911 case concerns the alleged theft of some proprietary software from AT&T which resulted in Federal crackdowns on various hacker BBSes, including the one at SJG. Read comp.telcom.dcom for more details. -- Scott Turner Posted: Tue Mar 6 19:30:56 1990 Ok since there have been a few people asking "why?" I think I'll throw out some of what I know. A certain group of "hackers" called the Legion of Doom has gained the attention and anger of the feds and Southern Bell. A while ago, several of their members were treated to the search and seizure act by the secret service, and there were lately some indictments. The feds & SBell say that the LoD broke into the 911 system and planned to publish some of the spoils. So you ask "Where does SJG enter in this?" Maybe you've heard something about Jolnet, attctc (Killer) and netsys They were recently shut down with very little warning and had lots of equiopment confiscated by the SS, as LoD members and associates used these, and the feds were looking for illegal material in private correspondance. Note that I said private, I am not saying that these are all run by "crooks." I am not quite sure about the connection to SJG, but I think that an employee of SJG happens to be a (retired?) member of the LoD, and the feds were expecting to find illegal data and transactions going on in the background. Whether or not they did, or will, I have no idea. I've tried hard not to editorialize on this, and I think I should stop before I do. If you want more information on this, I am finding a good bit on comp.dcom.telecom, although they have not said much about SJG specifically there. ========================================================= In article (Ken Yousten) writes: >I am not quite sure about the connection to SJG, but I think that an >employee of SJG happens to be a (retired?) member of the LoD, and the >feds were expecting to find illegal data and transactions going on in >the background. Whether or not they did, or will, I have no idea. That's essentially what I heard -- they were interested in "The Mentor," the chief editor at SJG, and allegedly an ex-member of the LoD. The various sources I've read and heard from say that his home was raided and his home system taken. I've also been told that SJG-BBS was taken not because of Mentor, but because it had an account on it from one of the active LoD members. I have no idea how accurate that information is. As I've said before, it's very unlikely the Feds will find anything on the SJG-BBS, unless it's in the private email files somewhere. The sjsops kept the system scrupulously clean. As a side note, the latest info I have is that whatever the Feds took from SJG, it's hurt their operations significantly. I think that's because they were going to release GURPS Cyberpunk very soon, and some of those files were apparently taken, so the production schedule got messed up. This is pure speculation on my part, so don't take it as gospel. ---Walter ================= END stuff from rec.games.board =================== ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeff Johnson | "Time is a shadow of motion." -- uunet!ingr!b17c!jaj!jeff | Shegeo Shingo ----------------------------------------------------------------------
