Sometime during May there was a thread about the evil effects of
evolution, and creationist claims that belief in evolution was
at the bottom of the moral decay of Western society. Shortly
after this thread expired a news item appeared on the front
page of "The Courier-Mail" - the daily morning newspaper in
Queensland, Australia - on May 31, 1993. It contained the
following items. I have replaced one word by ?????, and have
omitted some words.
Too much ????? leads to homosexuality, moral decay, racial
intolerance, economic decline and single-parent families, ...
"We should not be the slave of ?????," ... ????? had become a
"religion" ... and had led to gross moral decay with widespread
drug abuse and homosexuality and the growth of single-parent

A news item from the front page of "The Courier-Mail" - the daily
morning newspaper in Queensland, Australia - May 31, 1993.
The headline and the first five paragraphs read:
Democracy leads to decay: Malaysia PM
Kuala Lumpur: Too much democracy leads to homosexuality, moral
decay, racial intolerance, economic decline and single-parent
families, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says.
"We should not be the slave of democracy," Dr Mahathir told a
political rally in Kuala Lumpur.
He accused Western countries of double standards and said
immigrants to those nations were discriminated against.
"They are controlled in the ghettos, oppressed, assaulted and
even murdered," he said.
Democracy had become a "religion" in the West and had led to
gross moral decay with widespread drug abuse and homosexuality and
the growth of single-parent families.
So now we all know.
It's not the fault of those nasty evilutionists after all. The real
problem stems from those misleading documents Magna Carta and the
Declaration of Independence! Save our children from the perils of
democracy! Teach totalitarianism and dictatorship in our schools!
Bring back the Divine Right of Kings! --- Ken Smith
It is interesting that throughout most of its history, Christianity,
indeed all religion, but especially any established religion, can
hardly be associated with democratic ideas. In Western Europe it was
arguments about the "natural" rights of mankind, those rights
conferred to all people because they are people, which led to
democracy. The clergy and nobility and monarchs were all in league
against democratic movements.
Religionists of the conservative stripe, which includes all
Creationists, cry "Morality!" meaning my morality, as a battle cry
of controlling others by coercing their judgements on them.
