Item 1: What Americans Believe ------------------------------ According to a report by Farna Research Group in Glendale, CA: 65% of Americans say that Christians, Jews, Muslims and Buddhists all pray to the same god although called by different names. "Two out of three adults believe that it doesn't matter what god or higher power you pray to, because that universal force will respond regardless," the report says. 62% concur that "there is no such thing as absolute truth" and that "different people can define truth in conflicting ways and will still be correct." That figure rises to 74% for those 18 to 25 years old. Item 2: Paganism at the World Council of Churches ------------------------------------------------- A Korean professor's presentation to the 7th Assembly of the World Council of (Christian) Churches in Australia included shamanic dancing and invocation of the traditional spirits of Korean paganism. Some observers were shocked, but the presentation got a standing ovation. Commentary ---------- Most of the survey respondents consider themselves to be Christians, but they obviously don't share the hate-filled intolerance of the vocal minority. The WCC presentation shows a tolerance and respect for pagan religion at the highest levels of establishment Christianity. Both these items should remind us how unrepresentative Jack Chick and Bob Larson are of Christianity as a whole. Perhaps fears of an imminent return of the burning times are somewhat premature.
