In 1955, our scoutmaster stood before the Flaming Arrow Patrol and told
us we would add the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance from
now on. Of course, it wasn't the "real" POA, because the "real" POA was
in the Boy Scout Handbook, but we humored him and obeyed orders. As
Shakespeare once wrote, "To be under God, or not to be under God, that
is the question, by God." (Scans well, doesn't it?) Looks like the
answer might be yes. Get a load of this new edition of the
Upham/Bellamy classic, brought to you by the Center Road School in
Western, New York. In their brochure, "Christian School," we are
I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag, and to the Savior
for Whose kingdom it stands, one Savior, crucified, risen, and
coming again, with life and liberty for all who believe.
I am afraid to ask if that flag is the Stars & Stripes. If it isn't Old
Glory, what in Heaven's name could it be? White Doves on Field
Sanguine? Cross with Thorn tracery? My God!
Just thought you might get a chuckle out of this between bouts of
struggling with whether a person can have ever done anything other than
what he did in fact do. &^).
