Claudia Slate Reminds me of a something a Seneca Chief, Red Jacket, once said to a missionary named Cram who was trying to force the white man's religion on the red nations. Red Jacket said he understood that the Christian religion had been written in a book and handed down from father to son, but that the red man's religion had been handed down from father to son as well. Then he asked why, if there was but one religion, one way to worship the Great Spirit, did the white people differ so much on what that way was - especially seeing that they all had the same book. He went on to say he thought Rev. Cram, should spend some time teaching his religion to his white brothers. The Indians would watch. If they saw that it did the white man some good, that it made them honest and less disposed to cheat the Indians, then they would consider taking up Cram's offer to teach them.
