According to an AP article in the Saturday New York Times:
"Judges cannot require jurors who are atheists to swear an oath or any
other religion-based promise that might violate their beliefs, a
Federal appeals court [5th Circuit, New Orleans] has ruled."
"The woman Robin Murray-O'Hair [granddaughter of Madilyn] filed three
lawsuits when the judge, Guy Herman of Travis County, found her in
contempt and jailed her."
[She posted bond and was released after six hours detention.]
"Voting in the majority were Chief Judge Charles Clark, who was
appointed [by] Nixon, and Judge Irving L. Goldberg [appointed by
Johnson]. Judge William L. Garwood [appointed by Reagan] dissented."
