THEIST_WATCH Msg : 57 Written : 08/02/94 03:47pm From : ROBIN MURRAY-O'HAIR Status : To : ALL Subj : True Love Waits True Love Waits Naturally, it was not a teenage group which started the idea. It was white male Baptist who heads the Baptist Sunday School Board and "Youth for Christ." It all began when, in March of 1993, he conned fifty-nine teens at his Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Nashville, TN, to take "a vow of chastity until marriage." Naturally, there was no mention of masturbation. But in the intervening year he has spread his message as far and as fast as the Baptist Sunday School Board could reach. Why do they always go after the poor, the illiterate, the impressionable? By July 29 when the reverend called for a display in the mall in Washington, D.C. he was able to there announce that on the same day 6,000 teenagers in Uganda would be meeting for a rally in that country. Our good neighbors in Canada were also allegedly meeting. The reverend claims that 150 nations were actively involved in organizing True Love Waits campaigns for teenagers, probably in Rwanda, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Jericho and other East Bank settlements, as well as in Bangladesh, Algeria, and Haiti. For his own effort, he had teenagers hammer 211,163 little stakes holding cards into the grass on the National Mall. To each little stake there was affixed a signed card by youths pledging abstinence. The printed cards read: Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, those I date, my future mate and my future children to be sexually pure until the day I enter marriage. The young women wore "chastity pledge rings" which resembled gold wedding bands. The rings are supposed to be delivered to husbands on wedding nights. The young men in town for the occasion simply ogled all the women in the park wearing shorts. About 150 representatives of the group went to the White House to exuberantly tell President Clinton that they were waiting for "True Love and Marriage." President Clinton in his half-hour meeting with them, smiled broadly, kept his zipper up, and did not mention Paula Jones. *********************************************************************** * * * American Atheists website: http://www.atheists.org * * PO Box 140195 FTP: ftp://ftp.atheists.org * * Austin, TX 78714-0195 * * Voice: (512) 458-1244 Dial-THE-ATHEIST: * * FAX: (512) 467-9525 (512) 458-5731 * * * * Atheist Viewpoint TV: avtv@atheists.org * * Info on American Atheists: info@atheists.org, * * & American Atheist Press include your name and mailing address * * AANEWS -Free subscription: aanews-request@listserv.atheists.org * * and put "info aanews" in message body * * * * This text may be freely downloaded, reprinted, and/other * * otherwise redistributed, provided appropriate point of * * origin credit is given to American Atheists. * * * ***********************************************************************
