Press Release For release: May 5, 1993 American Atheists today decried the "Defame the First Amendment" Day which has been scheduled by both state officials and church mentors, acting together to mount "A National Day of Prayer" across the nation. "Every one of the politicians know that their call for prayer is an unconstitutional commingling of religion and government -- but they will commit any crime for a vote," remarked Jon Murray, the president of American Atheists. In the State of Texas, and other bastions of religion, the governor, the state Senate, and mayors of various cities have joined the insult to the Constitution by asking the religious to "come out" onto taxpayer-owned property (city halls and capitol steps) the better to defame the First Amendment. "It is what we can expect of air-heads who feel that their careers in politics are greater than the Constitution - and that includes both Bill and Hillary Clinton. "The nation needs secular solutions to its secular socio-economic and cultural problems not useless prayers thrown in the air," opined Madalyn O'Hair, the founder of American Atheists. American Atheists insist that the Congress of the United States betrayed the First Amendment when the National Day of Prayer call was first issued in 1988. Reagan, Bush, and now Clinton, have joined in the hypocrisy and deceit of citizens. *********************************************************************** * * * American Atheists website: * * PO Box 140195 FTP: * * Austin, TX 78714-0195 * * Voice: (512) 458-1244 Dial-THE-ATHEIST: * * FAX: (512) 467-9525 (512) 458-5731 * * * * Atheist Viewpoint TV: * * Info on American Atheists:, * * & American Atheist Press include your name and mailing address * * AANEWS -Free subscription: * * and put "info aanews" in message body * * * * This text may be freely downloaded, reprinted, and/other * * otherwise redistributed, provided appropriate point of * * origin credit is given to American Atheists. * * * ***********************************************************************
