That's how many folks are expected to turn out for the second anniversary of the predicted appearance of Mary at St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, Kentucky. Apparently in 1992 a female "visionary" predicted that Mary would turn up at the church on August 31. For that predicted sighting about 7900 people turned up. Several claimed to see Mary in a tree or a well there. In 1993 5000 people came to the church. Virgin Mary Appears in Georgia The question is, did she have a proper Southern accent? Since October 1990, Nancy Fowler has claimed that the Virgin Mary, mother of the Christian god Jesus, appears on the 13th of every month on her ceiling. Now ten thousand people appear each month outside her home to listen to the monthly message. And then on Thursday, October 13, Nancy Fowler came out from her farmhouse to announce . . . that Mary had shown up. In fact, "our lady was radiant. She wore a white veil and dress and she was beautiful." For the first time since May, Ms. Fowler alleged that the apparition gave a message: "Follow god or the earth will be plagued with war, famine, flood, and other suffering." Apparently, Mary also asked folks to pray for county officials who have been trying to limit crowds to 500 by requiring toilets, water, and medical care for those attending. After all, we don't want to lose those tourism bucks! In a related note, Mary also showed up in Hollywood, Florida on the 13th. Or at least that's the story of Rosa Lopez. She says the virgin mother speaks to her monthly too. Apparently she isn't quite dead and buried, because she keeps popping up in the U.S. wherever a small town needs a tourist attraction. Some recent U.S. sightings include: CONYERS, GEORGIA: Kathy Fowler, a homemaker, claims that Mary turns up regularly in her home. The first visit was on October 13, 1990, and the vision returned on the 13th day of "most" months until local authorities complained about the traffic and sanitation problems created by those who flocked to her home on these days. Now the Virgin only turns up each October 13. Ms. Fowler sees Mary on the ceiling of her "apparition room." HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA: The 13th of each month is also a red letter day for Rosa Lopez. That's when Mary shows up at her tract home. The Virgin didn't start traipsing to Florida, however, until Ms. Lopez visited Ms. Fowler and received miracle well water from her. Mary has also turned up for believers in MARLBORO, MARYLAND; DENVER; COLD SPRING, KENTUCKY; SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA; and EMMITSBURG, MARYLAND. And, let us not forget, BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS. There Ray Doiron, a retired truck driver, sees the Virgin Mary on the 13th of each month. And in October, 4500 other people gathered at Our Lady of the Snows Shrine to celebrate this visitation. But don't make plans to travel to Belleville for a November sighting. Apparently, the Virgin told Doiron last month that she would not show up again "for a while." Is is a coincidence that Doiron himself is unable to attend the visitations at the shrine for the next few months because of his wife's treatment for cancer? --Robin Murray-O'Hair, Sysop, American Atheist Online Services *********************************************************************** * * * American Atheists website: * * PO Box 140195 FTP: * * Austin, TX 78714-0195 * * Voice: (512) 458-1244 Dial-THE-ATHEIST: * * FAX: (512) 467-9525 (512) 458-5731 * * * * Atheist Viewpoint TV: * * Info on American Atheists:, * * & American Atheist Press include your name and mailing address * * AANEWS -Free subscription: * * and put "info aanews" in message body * * * * This text may be freely downloaded, reprinted, and/other * * otherwise redistributed, provided appropriate point of * * origin credit is given to American Atheists. * * * ***********************************************************************
