PRESS RELEASE For release: October 3, 1994 Madalyn Murray O'Hair, the founder of American Atheists, has made a special personal plea to Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders, Surgeon General of the United States, to request of President Clinton that he _not_ approve H.R. 4606 Appropriations Bill which was sent to him on September 30. Language introduced into the bill by the First Church of Christ Scientist (Christian Scientists) lobbyist Phil Davis would bar Human Health Services from requiring states to either drop their religious exemptions for healing through prayer or order medical care for children. Dr. O'Hair, who was diagnosed as a diabetic in 1977, told Dr. Elders that she survives only because of insulin therapy. Yet Christian Scientist parents have routinely refused insulin for their diabetic children, many of whom have died because of lack of such ordinary medical care. The language in H.R. 4606 to permit the deliberate murder of sick children by the substitution of prayer for ordinary medical care was introduced through the Christian Scientist lobbyist approaching Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) who is a Christian Scientist. Rep. Smith then was able to introduce Mr. Davis to Rep. John Edward Porter (R-Illinois), reared as a Christian Scientist, now the senior Republican on the subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee. Dr. O'Hair issued a simple cry of "Help" for the minor children who cannot, themselves, disagree with the parents' religious right to permit them to die. Dr. O'Hair emphasized that prayer is an entirely useless substitution for medication which has been proven to be appropriate to combat disease which readily yields to medical treatment.
