THE SALVATION OF BENJAMIN JUDGES 21 Intro Num 31:13-18 EXPLAIN I. FIRST PRESENTATION OF PROBLEM & SOLUTION (21:1-5) A. "Why did the Israelites take the vow not to let their daughters marry Benjamites?" (jbj p.319) 1. LOOK AT Dt 7:1-4 2. Benjamites had become spiritual Canaanites 3. This meant Benjamin would die out as a tribe B. Sacrifice as the salvation of Benjamin (LOOK AT vs 4) 1. Israel was already in fellowship with God (20:26) 2. Suggestion is: this was for Benjamites 3. LOOK AT vs 13 - evidently Benjamin accepted peace 4. PROBLEM: a) On what basis did Israel avoid exterminating Benjamin? (Dt 13:13-16 etc.) b) Again, the suggestion is the sacrifice was a substitionary one that took the punishment Benjamin deserved. C. LOOK AT vs 5 - The oath against non-participants 1. Remember Deborah, she only ridiculed them (5:15-17) 2. LOOK AT DT 13:6-9 (Benjamin had become a Canaanite) II. SECOND PRESENTATION OF PROBLEM AND SOLUTION (21:6-14) A. The oath and the death of Benjamin (21:6-7) B. The oath against non-participants (21:8) 1. Jabesh-Gilead had hindered the Lord's campaign 2. Similar to Moab in Numbers 31 C. The Hormah of Jabesh-Gilead as Benjamin's salvation (21:9-14) 1. vs 4 - God's fire consumed a substitute 2. here God consumes His enemies 3. God acts in redemption and vengeance together a) The waters that saved Noah in the ark drowned God's enemies b) The Passover saw the death of Egypt's firstborn sons and the salvation of Israel by a substitute lamb c) The Red sea parted for the Israelites and returned to drown the Egyptian soldiers. 4. Jabesh-Gilead is like Moab where only the virgins were kept alive (400) 5. There were 600 Benjamites (200 wives short) III. THIRD PRESENTATION OF PROBLEM AND SOLUTION (21:15-24) A. The oath and the death of Benjamin (21:15-18) 1. The Lord is the one who made the breach (vs 15) 2. The oath was not to give daughters in marriage B. New Birth as the salvation of Benjamin (21:19-24) 1. LOOK AT vs 21 & 23 - the word "dance" a) usually means "travail," "writhing," etc. having to do with labor pains & giving birth b) The girls were dancing to catch husbands c) This was not a rape as some suggest d) What would have been their father's objection? LOOK AT vs 22 e) The objection was not about marriage, but about the fact that Benjamites were the husbands (because of the oath) IV. CONCLUSION vs 25 READ JORDAN'S CONCLUSION pp.326-328
