OBSERVATIONS ON ABIDING IN CHRIST AND PRAYER John 15:1-8 vs 1 I AM THE TRUE VINE The vine supplies the branches with food and water. The vine is the life-line for the branches A vine spreads (e.g. Kudzu) Christ is planted in His Father's vineyard. He didn't just appear like a wildflower or weed. Christ is the root of the vine which supports all the branches (supplies sap) Christ's Gospel, like the vine, spreads salvation to the ends of the Earth MY FATHER IS THE HUSBANDMAN Even though the Earth is the Lord's, He doesn't get fruit unless He works it. The reason He gets so much fruit is because He is the wisest husbandman ever. vs 2 EVERY BRANCH IN ME THAT BEARETH NOT FRUIT HE TAKETH AWAY The Father is concerned about fruit. (What kind?) We expect grapes from a vine. From a Christian we expect Christianity (Christian life and conduct). Unfruitful branches are taken away. There are many who try to pass for branches, but they don't bear fruit. They have an outward profession only. Fruitful branches are always in need of purging or pruning by a good husbandman. Christians still have some notions or ideas, some passions or attitudes that need to be purged. The Father is the one who cares for and works on the fruitful branches. vs 3 NOW YE ARE CLEAN THROUGH THE WORD LOOK @ Eph 5:26-27 Doctrine, theology Christians are purged or made clean by the Word spoken to them in the Bible. They are sanctified by the truth. vs 4 ABIDE IN ME...THE BRANCH CANNOT BEAR FRUIT OF ITSELF, EXCEPT IT ABIDE IN THE VINE ABIDE = to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy); also- continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry(for) You cannot go it alone. You might thing you must first produce fruit and then approach Christ. But you cannot. Quit trying. vs 5 FOR WITHOUT ME YE CAN DO NOTHING. NOTHING? Nothing concerning fruit required by the Father. Without Christ (the vine) the Christian (the branch) can do nothing. Not just do no GREAT thing, but do NOTHING. vs 6 IF A MAN ABIDE NOT IN ME He'll be cast into the fire. vs 7 IF YE ABIDE IN ME You'll find power in prayer. AND MY WORDS ABIDE IN YOU You'll find power in prayer. Do you continue, or are you easily interrupted, distracted, other things interfering.? Books, movies, music, TV???? Song lyrics that haunt you. Movie scenes you can't shake. Wrong thoughts or fantasies from bad books. The Christian embraces Christ in the Word If we abide in Christ, and His word in us, then we will ask for what we need to be fruitful branches. This is because the word in us is full of promises that will be turned into prayers. vs 8 The fruitfulness of Christians glorifies the Father LOOK @ Matt 5:16 POWER OF PRAYER & POWER IN PRAYER IF ye abide in me Ye shall ask what ye will - your "will" will be shaped by God's Word and God's will. You will be asking according to God's will because you'll know it IF His Word abides in you. IF ye abide in me How will you know if you are abiding in Christ? What will it feel like? What will it feel like when you pray? LOOK @ vs 10 If ye KEEP my commandments, ye shall abide in my love KEEP = practice, obey, guard OBEDIENCE is an ingredient to prayer John 8:31 says if ye continue in my word CONTINUE is same as ABIDE vs 10 Failing to guard the gospel can keep us from abiding in Christ and from answered prayer. Guard the commandments, keep them from error. How? by meditating on God's word (JOSH 1:8) Prayer and Bible Study go together. ***THOUGHT*** WHAT DOES THIS MEAN WHEN YOU PRAYERS GO UNANSWERED?
